1929- . German physicist who discovered in
1958 that in certain conditions a nucleus can
be stimulated to emit very sharply defined
beams of gamma rays. This became known as the
Mossbauer effect. Such a beam was used in
1960 to provide the first laboratory test of
Einstein's general theory of relativity. For
his work on gamma rays Mossbauer shared the
1961 Nobel Prize for Physics with Robert
Hofstadter.
